Food, glorious Santa Barbara Food, by Astrid NelsonMaster Chef Astrid Nelson
It is January in Santa Barbara, and the first sunny days drive us out, looking for "special sales" and perhaps stock up on straw hats, sunglasses or Capri pants in anticipation for spring and summer. But comes the evening and the sun disappears early, the temperature drops and we gratefully retreat to our favorite slippers and wouldn't an ideal meal be a bowl of warm rustic soup, sipped in front of the fireplace? This is a scene never shown on our local postcards, but still, it is a reality during those cool Santa Barbara winter evenings. Soups are often overlooked by those chefs who believe they are a lowly dish, unworthy of special attention. But I have proposed a few in my wedding menus and noticed with pleasure that they are very well received. Even in the summer, I like to present a colorful duo of cold red and yellow pepper creams, adorned with a dollop of avocado mousse and parmesan tuiles: a creation worthy of an impressionist artist! In our winter months, I love to take time and watch over the slow simmer of a chicken consommé, flavored with Madeira wine and creamed chicken quenelles. From my readings, I have learned that to start a wedding reception with a soup, denotes on the part of the future bride, a talent for marital bliss.  According to P. Morton Shand (A XX century british architectural critic as well as an epicurean and influential oenologue) a woman who doesn't know how to cook soup should not be allowed to marry. I further read that Confucius abandoned his wife because she was unable to concoct a good broth. Times have changed, but if women have acquired credibility in all kinds of fields today, those are all located far from the kitchen realm. Young brides beware, the lowly soup may yet betray you.!

Remember Every Guest…
By Caroline Sweeney

Remember Every Guest… Even the Little Ones!

Recently, my family attended a beautiful wedding reception on the coast.
Everything was perfect -- from the flowers to the music to the lavish buffet. As we enjoyed the afternoon, my sister and I were admiring how the bride had thought of every detail. Then we realized one thing was missing… there were no bored children in sight!
The bride really had thought of everything. She had hired professional childcare for the reception. The wedding was as enjoyable for the children as it was for the adults.
The kids had a party within a party! As the parents enjoyed the reception, all ages of children were entertained. They put on a puppet show, played organized games, and made beautiful crafts.
You might consider providing this service for your special occasion at a hotel or winery. They often have rooms available that can be creatively transformed to a fun and safe area for the children. Do check to make sure whomever you hire is licensed and insured with an appropriate adult - child ratio with plenty of experience.
The Little Guest can be reached at (805) 688-1812
This is one detail you don't want to overlook! Visit their web site for more information: www.syv.com/thelittleguest.

Our very own Lord of the Rings: Richard Lionheart In Santa Barbara, Richard Lionheart is a well-known Master Goldsmith, who designs personal wedding rings for celebrities and private brides alike. His designs will reflect your ideas, your design ,your dream. He specializes in blending elements that add pigment to his high carat gold or platinum wedding rings. With your ring, you also get the sketch used for its design, a truly unique keepsake, a work of art, suitable for framing.

A precious souvenir from your wedding in colorful Santa Barbara.

"...My name is Richard Lionheart. I started making jewelry at the age of 17. For the last 30 years I have passionately pursued all aspects of jewelry making and design. For me this includes the skills of designer, master gold-platinum smith, stone cutter, stone setter and unusual names of jewelry skills needing explanations too long to fit here. Just as important as the physical skill to make beautiful quality jewelry is an honorable personal philosophy. Integrity, honesty, and fairness can be just words, but the character they describe I put into my words, actions and jewelry..."
"...I'm a romantic, an artist, its not my job to sell you on anything. You and I search together to find what it is that you want and then I make it for you. I like people and working with couples is richly rewarding. I enjoy talking, learning from you and discovering what will be the perfect blend of elements to make your wedding ring dreams come true. For the groom, the quality and selection of men's rings in stores is poor and dated. I take the dread out of the thought of wearing a ring for men because I create an awesome ring that fits your personality, taste, and style. Together we will make the whole experience of getting your rings an enjoyable memory and each time you look at them you will smile and feel satisfaction..." - Richard Lionheart: (805) 681 0665

Estate-visits, by Angela Arrigoni
For the high-end, Private Estates: Words of Advice prior to viewing estates:
#1. Allow for a 3 day advance notice if you want to be taken on a tour that includes several chosen estates.
#2. Remember, private estates are someone's private homes. Not public venues. Arrangements that an owner might want to make prior to your visit include: an unscheduled cleaning may have to be scheduled (gardener, maid) , children may need to go to sitters, pets need to be secured away, agent may need to be informed of gate/security codes or be prepared to meet an estates housekeeper etc.
#3. Typically there is a fee for a coordinator's time and expenses needed to organize visits to several venues, with an itinerary that makes geographic sense. It can be time consuming contacting property owners and coordinating a site tour. Often clients are met at the airport by the agent who then chauffeurs the client to each estate avoiding direction difficulties and a whole host of potential problems.

More estates guidlines are to be found in our VIP service area.
